Dating after divorce: what studies found, and what no calendar can tell you

The short answer: we found no study that supports a waiting period for dating after divorce. We read 22 top-ranking articles, and 4 of the 22 name one: 18 months before anything serious, 12 months, one year before dating seriously, and "some months to a year". None of the 4 links a study for its figure. What research does show is narrower and kinder. Among 208 people who divorced during a long-running survey, dating someone steadily went with better adjustment. How fast people remarried did not predict a second divorce. Being ready matters more than the date.

Dating again after a divorce, in five findings

A wooden bowl of lemons on a kitchen counter in morning light

Most advice on this subject is opinion. A small part has been measured, and that part fits on one screen.

One. In Wang and Amato's study of 208 people who divorced during a 17-year longitudinal survey, adjustment was positively associated with dating someone steadily and with remarriage. That is a correlation: people who feel better may simply date sooner.

Two. Among 319 Texas mothers followed monthly after filing for divorce, a good new relationship went with a lift in well-being, and a poor one went with lower well-being than staying single.

Three. Wolfinger's analysis of a national survey found "no evidence of a rebound effect": time between the end of a marriage and the next union did not predict how long the remarriage lasted.

Four. After a divorce at 50 or older, about 22% of women and 37% of men moved in with or married someone within 10 years. Most did not.

Five. We found no study that sets a waiting period, and none that reports a "success rate" for a first relationship.

Who the studies studied

Almost all of this research follows formerly married heterosexual adults in the United States, and two of the richest studies follow mothers with young children in one state. Where a finding comes from a narrow group, we name the group next to it.

What this page does not cover

Dating before a divorce is final is a legal question for your attorney, and we leave it there. Getting over the marriage itself is on our page about coping after a divorce. This page starts once you are thinking about other people.

The calendar question

How long after divorce to start dating: four numbers online, none with a study

An empty dance studio with a wooden floor and tall windows

Searches such as "when to start dating after divorce" or "how long to wait to date after divorce" expect a number. The pages that answer them supply one, and the numbers do not agree.

Waiting period namedArticles of 22Study linked for it
18 months before anything serious1None
12 months1None
One year before dating seriously1None
"Some months to a year", no fixed window1None
No number at all18Not applicable

The table restates our count of 22 top-ranking articles. Thirteen of them talk about being ready instead of naming a date, which is closer to what the evidence can carry.

Where "a year" seems to come from

None of the four links a study for its figure. Round numbers travel well, and "a year" sounds like a full cycle of birthdays and holidays alone. That is an intuition, not a finding.

When people actually start

The best diary data we could open come from the Texas mothers. When the study first met them, on average 14.56 months after separating, 44.5% were already in a new relationship. Over the next two years 46% dated one partner, 21% dated several in a row, 18% dated more than one at a time, and 15% did not date at all. Every one of those paths was common enough to count as normal.

How soon to date after divorce if you feel ready early

Early is not the same as wrong. The Wolfinger result concerns marriages, not first dates, but it is the only test of speed we found, and speed did not predict failure. If you want to know when to date after divorce in your own case, the seven checks below tell you more than a month count. Our page on when to start dating after a breakup covers the general version.

If someone says it is too soon, or too late

Relatives who name a deadline have no study behind them, in either direction. Neither does a friend who thinks two years alone is "avoiding life". How long recovery itself tends to take is a separate question, answered with panel data on timelines after a divorce.

Repartnering after a marriage ends: what six studies recorded

A home dinner table set for two with plates and garden flowers

Researchers say "repartnering" for dating, moving in together or remarrying after a marriage. Here is what each study measured, in whom, and how much of it we read.

01

Dating steadily and feeling better

Wang and Amato's abstract lists "dating someone steadily" among the things that went with better adjustment. It also notes that stressors such as moving or losing friends mattered less than expected. Older people in the sample adjusted somewhat less well than younger ones, and the abstract gives no ages. Nothing in it says that dating causes the improvement.

02

Quality mattered more than status

In the Texas study, being in a relationship was not the helpful thing in itself. A satisfying, committed one went with a lift. A poor one left mothers reporting more negative feelings than mothers who stayed single. The authors add that happier mothers may have attracted partners more easily.

03

Speed: the one test we found

Wolfinger's abstract says self-help books advise against rushing and that "there is little evidence supporting this recommendation". The University of Utah's release gives the sample as 1,171 adults. We did not open the paper itself.

The lift from a new partner faded in older adults

In the Health and Retirement Study analysis by Lin and colleagues, people who divorced after 50 showed fewer depressive symptoms when they repartnered, and the benefit "persisted for several years" before scores returned to where they had been before the divorce.

Many divorced people are not looking

In a Pew survey from late 2019 (4,860 US adults; the report on single Americans came out in 2020), 56% of divorced singles said they were not currently looking for a relationship or dates. The most common major reasons among all singles who were not looking: more important priorities (47%) and simply liking being single (44%).

What none of this can tell you

Every figure above is an average across people who chose for themselves. Nobody was assigned to date early or late, so no study can say what would have happened to you on the other path. What the larger panels found about life after divorce in general is on our divorce page.

A word about "repartnered"

In the gray-divorce studies it means living with or marrying someone. People who date and keep separate homes were not counted, so those percentages understate how many had someone.

Checks

Ready to date? Seven checks that do the work a calendar cannot

Two coats and a scarf hanging on a hallway coat rack

These are our own, built from what the studies point at: the state you are in matters more than the month. They are not a validated test.

Reading your answers

Five or more in the middle column: go, slowly. Three or four: a coffee will not hurt, and a relationship can wait. Fewer: this month has another job. None of the columns is a verdict, and they shift within weeks.

Know what you want this year

Company, sex, a partner, a co-parent for your children one day: these are different searches, and you may want the first long before the last. Say which one you are on, to yourself and then to dates.

The marriage in three sentences

Several ranking pages tell readers to "do the work" before dating. A modest version: can you say what went wrong, including your own part, without a villain and without flattening yourself? If the marriage was one you did not choose to end, our section on the divorce you did not want comes first.

If most answers lean wait

Then waiting is the informed choice, not a failure. Loneliness is real in the meantime, and friends and family can ease it; see loneliness after divorce and living alone. The general checklist for any breakup is on the rebound page.

Our own count

We checked 22 top-ranking articles for a waiting period

The first question about dating after divorce is usually how long to wait. We opened the 22 articles that rank highest for seven such searches and recorded whether each names a waiting period, which one, and what it cites.

Bar chart of what 22 top-ranking articles about dating after divorce include

Published by a law firm or family-law service523%

4 of the 22 articles name a waiting period, and the four do not match: 18 months before anything serious, 12 months, one year before dating seriously, and "some months to a year" with no fixed window. None of the 4 links to a study for its figure. The other 18 give no number.

5 of the 22 link to any journal, government or university source, and 5 were published by law firms or family-law services. 13 talk about being ready instead of naming a date, which is closer to what the research we read can support.

How we got these numbers

Pages taken from the top 20 Google results in the United States for seven queries about dating after divorce (Ahrefs, 12 October 2026) plus the pages a second search engine returned for the main query, excluding video, forum and social results, blog index pages and site home pages: 22 articles on 22 sites with at least 300 words of text. Waiting periods and publisher type were recorded by reading each article and checked against the saved copy; "talk about being ready" and "mention a rebound" come from fixed word patterns. "Links to a source" means a link to a journal, .gov or .edu address anywhere on the page.

The figures are from Pew's 2023 summary of online dating in the United States. A separate national survey from 2017 found that meeting online had become the most common way heterosexual couples meet, passing introductions through friends around 2013 (we read the abstract).

01

Apps, in general terms

An app is an introduction service and nothing more. Pick one, write a short honest profile, and give it a fixed slot in your week so it does not fill every evening. Nearly half of users in the Pew survey (46%) described their experience as negative, so a discouraging month is ordinary, not a judgment on you.

02

Offline routes still work

Friends who know you are open to meeting someone, a class or club that meets weekly, volunteering, a sports league. A recurring activity lets you see a person several times before anything is at stake.

03

Messages, then meeting

Write the way you talk. Ask about something specific in the profile, answer what you are asked, and suggest a short meeting once the exchange is easy.

A first date after divorce

Keep it small: a coffee or a walk, an hour, daylight if you like. Tell a friend where you are. You may be more nervous than you were at 25. You are there to find out whether an hour with this person is pleasant.

Pace: casual dating after divorce, or one person

Both appear in the data. A quarter of divorced, separated or widowed singles on the dating market told Pew they wanted only casual dates. Either is fine when the other person knows which one they are in.

What to notice on early dates

One ranking article warns against choosing chemistry over substance and against dating someone's potential. In practice: watch how they treat a server, a late train, your "no thanks". Notice whether you like yourself around them. A strong spark in week one says you are attracted, which is good news and not yet information about fit.

How to date after divorce without repeating the marriage

We found no tested method. The usual advice for dating after divorce is to slow down, and slow has one real advantage: patterns need time to show. Ask friends who knew you married what they see; choosing whom to lean on matters here too.

Words

Saying you are divorced: how much, and on which date

Dates three to fiveWhat you want now; how parenting shapes your weekMoney and paperwork

Use the divorced status if the app offers one. It saves both of you a conversation.

The two-sentence version

Something like: "I was married for eleven years and we divorced two years ago. It was hard, and I am in a good place now." Then ask them a question. If two sentences will not come out calmly, that is one of the readiness checks answering itself.

Talking about your ex

A date may hear how you describe a former spouse as a preview of how you would describe them one day. Keep it honest and brief, neither bitter nor saintly. If you find you miss your ex-spouse while seeing someone, that has its own page: missing an ex while you are with someone new.

If the marriage involved abuse

You owe no date that story, on any schedule. If your ex-spouse still frightens, follows or threatens you, planning for safety while you start seeing someone is what the National Domestic Violence Hotline does: 1-800-799-7233, text START to 88788, or chat at thehotline.org. Sex after divorce: nerves, wanting it, and not wanting it

Reading glasses on a folded blanket on a cushioned window seat

Among the search suggestions we collected, 51 concern sex after divorce: the first time, missing it, wanting more, wanting none. They are suggestions, not a head count, but the range is the point.

01

First time sex after divorce

After years with one person, a new person's body and habits are unfamiliar, and yours are to them. First sex after divorce can be awkward more than dramatic. Saying "this is my first time since my marriage" is allowed.

02

Wanting a lot of it, or none

Both show up among the suggestions ("increased sex drive after divorce", "not interested in sex after divorce"). We found no study that tracked desire through a divorce, so we will not call either one typical.

03

Consent, both ways

You may say no at any point, including after saying yes last week, and so may they. Being out of practice does not oblige you to keep someone else's pace. A partner who is right for you can hear "not yet" without sulking.

What a survey analysis found about newly single adults

The stereotype is a spree. Wade and DeLamater's analysis of survey data found that newly single people did find new sexual partners, but "the rate at which they acquired new partners did not support the stereotype", and men with custody of their children seemed oriented toward a steady partner. We read the abstract only, and it does not give the sample size.

Later in life

In a national sample of 3,005 US adults aged 57 to 85 (all marital statuses, not divorced people specifically), 73% of those 57 to 64 and 53% of those 65 to 74 reported being sexually active. Only 38% of men and 22% of women had discussed sex with a physician since turning 50.

Protection, in one sentence

Protection and testing with a new partner apply at every age, and a doctor or a sexual health clinic can tell you what fits your situation; we give no medical advice here.

Sex after divorce for women and for men: the measured part

Thin. Search queries exist for "sex after divorce for women" and "sex after divorce for men", yet beyond the two studies above we found no comparison worth quoting. Advice that assigns each sex a script has no data under it.

If a partner pressures or frightens you

Pressure after a clear no is not enthusiasm. You can leave, and you can talk it through with the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or by texting START to 88788.

Children

Dating after divorce with kids: three ranking pages, and what studies recorded

Raised vegetable beds in a community garden with a watering can

In our count, 3 of the 22 articles name a waiting period before a partner meets the children. We found no study that tested one. What exists is narrower.

GradedAwareness and contact grow as the romance deepens47%
TransparentChildren know and are exposed to it from the first date40%
Compared with each other for children's outcomesNot reported in the abstractNot applicable

The shares come from a phone survey of 78 divorcing custodial parents by Anderson, Greene and colleagues (abstract read). It describes what parents in a small sample did. It does not show which approach is best.

What two studies of mothers found

In monthly reports from 316 Texas mothers of elementary-age children, none of the mothers' dating transitions (starting, continuing, breaking up) significantly predicted children's behavior. Closeness between mother and child changed a few effects. All measures were the mothers' own reports.

"My child and I are a package deal"

That is the title of a 2011 paper on divorced custodial mothers (abstract read). Mothers who were more adult-focused in repartnering reported lower rapport and less joint time with their children. That is an association among custodial mothers in one study, not proof that dating costs children attention.

Telling children you are dating

Principles, since we found no trial: they should hear it from you, in a sentence sized to their age, without being asked for permission or made to keep secrets. A casual date does not need announcing.

Meeting a partner

Our view, not a finding: wait until you expect the person to be around in six months, keep the first meeting short and ordinary, and let the child set the warmth. A partner who resents your children's claim on you has told you something early.

Dating after divorce with teenage children, and adult ones

With teenagers, in our view, honesty is cheaper than concealment. Adult children matter as well: among 1,359 parents who divorced after 50, those living with a child, or near one they saw often, were less likely to repartner (abstract read).

The other parent

Whether to tell your co-parent, and how, we leave to you and any agreement you have. If the other parent frightens you, this does not apply as written: call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1-800-799-7233, before you announce anything. Wording for contact that cannot be avoided is under low contact.

How to date after divorce at 40

If you are dating in your 40s after divorce, plan around the week you actually have. Someone you meet may have a history too, so yours can stay short. Be specific about your week ("free alternate weekends") and about children, yours and any you still want.

How to date after divorce at 50

The steps are the same; the comparison point is older. After a long marriage you may be measuring dates against thirty years of shorthand, which no stranger can match in an evening, so give yourself room.

Gray divorce: fewer new households

In the Health and Retirement Study, most people who divorced at 50 or older had not repartnered ten years on, and when they did it was more often by living together than by marrying. Men's chances rose for about eight years and then leveled off. The authors note that dating and "living apart together" were not counted. More on divorce after a long marriage.

Comparisons

Men and women after divorce: the differences surveys measured

Wooden crates of apples and pears at a market stall seen from above

Four measured gaps, all averages. None of them describes a particular man or woman.

Divorced or widowed adults who say they do not want to remarry (Pew 2014)30%54%
Single adults currently looking for a relationship or dates (Pew 2020)61%38%
Repartnered within 10 years of a divorce at 50 or older (Brown and colleagues)37%22%

The first two rows are from Pew's 2014 report on remarriage, and they include widowed people. The third covers all singles, not only divorced ones.

Fewer women want to remarry, and that is a preference

More than half of divorced or widowed women told Pew they did not want to marry again. Reading that as "women cannot find anyone" gets it backwards: it was an answer about wishes.

Dating after divorce for men: what is and is not known

On dating after divorce for a man, the measured part is small. Men were more often looking and more often repartnered. That says nothing about whether those relationships were good, and the most detailed well-being study on this page is about mothers. Comparisons of how each sex fares after the divorce itself are under life after divorce for men and for women.

Lesbian dating after divorce, and gay dating: missing from the studies

There are search queries for lesbian dating after divorce, and the research has little for them. The gray-divorce study removed same-sex unions from its sample, and the how-couples-meet finding concerns heterosexual couples. Nothing here on timing or readiness depends on the sex of your next partner, but we cannot point to data.

How to use an average

As background, never as a forecast. A 61% figure does not tell a woman she will not want to date, or a man that he should.

Dating a divorced man or a divorced woman: questions that beat a label

Of the 595 search suggestions we sorted, 70 are about dating a divorced man. "Divorced" is a legal status. It tells you a marriage ended, and nothing about why or who this person is now.

01

Dating a recently divorced woman or man

"Recently" means housing, money and routines may still be moving. Go at their real speed, not their stated one, and ask plainly whether the divorce is final. Being told you are the first person since the marriage is information, and it is not a sentence; the next section has the data.

02

Dating a divorced man red flags, as behaviors

One ranking article sorts newly divorced men into three types. Types are labels. Behaviors are evidence: contempt whenever the ex comes up, a story with no part of their own in it, secrecy about whether it is final, pressure to move fast, anger when you say no. These would be flags in anyone, married before or not. If someone you are seeing frightens you or will not accept a no, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233, text START to 88788) takes those calls.

03

Dating a divorced man with kids

His time may be partly spoken for, and plans can change on short notice. Read that as the arrangement working, not a slight. Meeting the children is his decision and theirs, on their schedule. If you want children of your own, say so early; it is a fair deal-breaker on either side.

Dating a divorced man in his 40s, or in his 50s

The suggestions split by decade ("dating a divorced man in his 40s", "dating a divorced man in his 50s"), and we found no study that compares divorced men by decade. Ask the practical things: whether children live with him, and what his week looks like. In the Pew survey from late 2019, 42% of single men 40 and older were not looking to date, against 71% of single women of that age. Those shares say nothing about this one.

Is dating a divorced woman any different?

Not in what to ask. Search interest in dating a divorced woman matches that for dating a divorced man (an estimated 150 searches a month each in our keyword data), and the questions in the table apply unchanged. If she has children at home, the section on children shows what two studies of mothers recorded. The "package deal" finding there is about custodial mothers in one sample.

If you suspect you are the rebound

Ask what they want, and believe the answer over the intensity. Our page on being someone else's rebound goes through the signs and what they can and cannot show.

When their ex-spouse is hostile

An angry ex is their history arriving in your week. Contact that threatens or follows either of you is a safety matter: the hotline at 1-800-799-7233 advises partners and bystanders too.

The big claim

The first four rows are from a National Center for Health Statistics report based on interviews with 10,847 women; the fifth from a Census Bureau report on marriages and divorces. Both are old, and both count marriages, not relationships.

What those numbers do and do not say

Second marriages in that survey ended somewhat more often than first ones: 39% against one-third at ten years. A figure of "about 60%" circulates online; we could not trace it to data we could open. Either way, a marriage statistic cannot grade the first person you have dinner with.

Does a first serious relationship after divorce usually last?

In the Texas diaries, 46% of mothers dated a single partner across the two years, and most relationships were rated high in quality. A relationship that runs a year and ends has not necessarily failed.

Is the first relationship after divorce always a rebound?

No. "Rebound" describes a motive (using someone to get away from a loss), not a position in a sequence. Six of the 22 articles we counted mention a rebound, and the one study we found that tested the idea, on remarriages, found no evidence that speed predicted how long they lasted. Definitions and the evidence are on what a rebound relationship is and how long rebounds last.

When a new relationship after divorce ends

It can hurt out of proportion and feel like the larger loss again. That is not proof you chose badly. The first-days advice on our home page applies, and the section on relationships after divorce has more on the Wolfinger result.

The contrast trap

Two ranking pages warn about choosing the opposite of your ex. Opposite on one trait tells you little about the rest. Judge the person in front of you on their own week-to-week behavior.

Feelings

Why this can feel harder than it did at 25

Eleven of the suggestions we sorted are about dating after divorce being hard, frightening or guilt-laden; "why is dating after divorce so hard" is one of them. Four ordinary reasons, none of them a defect.

01

Guilt, and "it feels like cheating"

Years of loyalty do not switch off with a decree. The feeling can fade with time and says nothing about whether you are doing wrong. If guilt is tied to having ended the marriage, see regret after divorce.

02

Fear of choosing badly again

Reasonable, and useful in small doses: it slows you down. In large doses it turns every date into an interrogation. Some writers explain this with attachment or nervous-system models; we found no study testing those for dating after a divorce, so we leave them aside.

03

Everything is compared with the marriage

A new person has no shared history, so early dates feel thin beside twenty years, even unhappy years. Our page on starting over after divorce covers rebuilding the rest of the week.

After an affair, a bitter divorce or a second divorce

Trust comes back by evidence, slowly, and a new partner did not do what the last one did. Say what you need ("I do better with plans kept") without making them pay an old bill. After a second divorce the label may weigh more in your own head than in a date's.

If your ex-spouse wants to try again

That is a separate decision from dating, with its own evidence: deciding whether to get back together and the counts on couples who reunite after divorce. If this ex-spouse frightened or pressured you, do not weigh it alone: advocates at the National Domestic Violence Hotline answer at 1-800-799-7233 and by text (START to 88788).

Not dating at all is a complete answer

Fifty-six percent of divorced singles in the Pew survey were not looking. If you would like the people around you to stop asking, one sentence to try: "I am fine as I am for now." A friend who wants to help can read how to support someone through a divorce.

Safety

Meeting strangers from apps: a short routine, scams and pressure

More than half of dating-app users in the 2022 Pew survey (52%) said they had come across someone they believed was trying to scam them. A routine costs five minutes.

01

Before you meet

Have a short video or phone call first. The Federal Trade Commission suggests a reverse image search of the profile picture to see whether it appears under another name. Keep your address, workplace and children's details out of early chats.

02

The first meeting

A public place, your own transport there and back, and a friend who knows where you are and when you expect to be home. Watch your drink. Leaving early needs no excuse beyond "I am going to head off".

03

Money

The FTC's guidance on romance scams is blunt: "Never send money or gifts to a sweetheart you haven't met in person." Its warning signs include someone who can never meet and who asks for gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency. Report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

A date who frightens or pressures you

If someone ignores a no, turns up uninvited, tracks your location or threatens you, stop replying and tell someone. The National Domestic Violence Hotline takes calls about dating partners: 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788, at any hour. In immediate danger call 911.

A lookup: time since the divorce was final, and what you want right now

Two choices, sixteen combinations. Each gives what the research says, one step, and one thing to leave alone.

Where you are, and what fits it

Pick the closest option in each list.

What the research says

We found no study that sets a waiting period. In the Texas study, 44.5% of mothers were already seeing someone when first interviewed.

One step

One low-stakes outing a week with people in general: a class, a club, a friend's dinner. Let dating grow out of that if it does.

One thing to leave

Leave the idea that you must either date properly or stay home. Company is a fair goal by itself.

If an ex-spouse or a date frightens or pressures you, skip the lookup: the National Domestic Violence Hotline answers at 1-800-799-7233 (or text START to 88788), and there is more in the safety contacts in the section below. This is a way to sort published findings, not a prediction about you.

Support

When dating is the wrong project for this month

This site is not therapy, and wanting to date does not mean you need any. A few situations call for something other than a profile.

Signs to pause

Each date leaves you worse for days. You are dating mainly so your ex-spouse will hear of it. You cannot be alone for an evening. Drinking has crept up around dates. None of these is shameful; each says the divorce is still the main event, and our page on telling slow recovery from stuck may help.

When to talk to a professional

If low mood, panic or sleeplessness has lasted for weeks and gets in the way of work or parenting, a doctor or licensed therapist is the right next step. That is true whether or not you ever date again.

If you are thinking about harming yourself

In the United States you can call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org, to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It is free, confidential and available at any hour, every day.

If your ex-spouse frightens you

Threats, following, or anger about you seeing someone are safety matters, not jealousy to be managed. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is at 1-800-799-7233, by text (START to 88788) and at thehotline.org. Do not try to reason it out with them alone.

Questions

Dating after divorce: thirteen plain answers

How long should you wait to date after divorce?

We found no study that sets a waiting period. Of 22 top-ranking articles we read, 4 name one (18 months before anything serious, 12 months, one year before dating seriously, and "some months to a year") and none of the 4 links a study for it. Readiness is a better guide than the calendar.

When do most people start dating after a divorce?

There is no national count. In one Texas study of 319 mothers, 44.5% were already in a new relationship when first interviewed, on average about 14 months after separating, and 15% did not date at all over the next two years.

Is there a first relationship after divorce success rate?

We found no study that reports one. The nearest data are about marriages: in a 1995 national survey of women aged 15 to 44, 39% of second marriages had ended within 10 years, against one-third of first marriages.

Is the first relationship after divorce always a rebound?

No. A rebound is defined by motive, not by order. The one study we found that tested speed, on remarriages in a national survey, found no evidence that speed predicted how long they lasted.

How do I know I am ready to date again?

Signs that lean ready: an ordinary week alone is mostly fine, a date appeals because of curiosity about a person, you can describe the marriage in two calm sentences, and it would not matter whether your ex heard about it.

Should I say I am divorced on a dating profile?

Yes, as a status and nothing more. Give the fact early and the story later: how long ago on a first date, what went wrong once you are becoming a couple. We found no study comparing early and late disclosure.

When should my children meet someone I am dating?

We found no study that tested a waiting period, although 3 of the 22 articles we counted name one. In a study of 316 mothers, their dating transitions did not significantly predict children's behavior. Our view: wait until you expect the person to stay.

Is dating after divorce different for men and women?

On average, yes, in what people want. In Pew surveys, 54% of divorced or widowed women and 30% of men said they did not want to remarry, and 61% of single men against 38% of single women were looking for dates. Averages do not describe individuals.

Is dating a divorced man a red flag?

No. Divorced is a legal status that says a marriage ended. Flags are behaviors: contempt for an ex, a story with no part of his own in it, secrecy about whether the divorce is final, pressure, or anger at a no. If a date or an ex-spouse frightens or pressures you, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline on 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788.

What should I ask someone who is recently divorced?

How long ago it was final, what they are looking for now, how things work with any children's other parent, and what they would do differently. The answers show their week and their self-awareness. They cannot show the future.

Is it normal to be nervous about sex after divorce?

Yes. After years with one partner, a new person is unfamiliar, and you can say so. You can say no at any point. For protection and testing, ask a doctor or a sexual health clinic what fits your situation.

Are dating apps safe after a divorce?

They carry the same risks for everyone. In a 2022 Pew survey, 52% of users said they had come across someone they thought was trying to scam them. Meet in public, tell a friend, and follow the FTC's rule never to send money to someone you have not met in person.

What if I do not want to date at all?

Then you have company. In a Pew survey from late 2019, 56% of divorced singles were not looking for a relationship or dates. Among all single adults who were not looking, divorced or not, the most common major reasons were other priorities and liking being single.

Counts of articles in these answers come from our reading of 22 ranking pages; study figures are linked in the source list. How we pick and read sources, and what we refuse to publish, is on the about page.
